Early Warning and Surveillance of Infectious Diseases

This site provides links to data on disease outbreaks as well as climate and ecological that might impact the spread of infectious diseases.

PulseNet

PulseNet is a surveillance system for early detection of food borne diseases. It uses DNA fingerprinting to allow detected pathogens to be quickly compared to a national on-line database maintained by the CDC.

Global Invasive Species Program

The Global Invasive Species Program (GISP) is coordinated by the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment(SCOPE), in collaboration with the World Conservation Union (IUCN),the Center for Agriculture and Biosciences International (CABI Bioscience) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The program is developing early warning indicators for invasive species as well as supporting research to examine the ecological, economic, and human health consequences of invasives.

Healthy People 2000 and 2010

Healthy People 2000 was released in 1990. It is a comprehensive agenda organized into 22 priority areas, with 319 supporting objectives. Three overarching goals are to (1) increase years of healthy life, (2) reduce disparities in health among different population groups, and (3) achieve access to preventive health services. New Healthy People 2010 objectives were released on January 25, 2000.

Emerging Foodborne Diseases: An Evolving Public Health Challenge

Alabama: Region 2020

Region 2020 is the outcome of work initiated in 1996 by a group of 56 citizens from a cross-section of Jefferson and Shelby Counties in Alabama. Region 2020's purpose was to develop a visioning process that would engage all who live, shop, work, study, and seek health care in the central Alabama region in a participatory process.

Kentucky Long Term Policy Research Center

The Long-Term Policy Research Center serves as a catalyst to change the way decisions are made in government by providing decision makers a broader context in which to make decisions, taking into consideration the long-term implications of policy and critical trends and emerging issues which are likely to have a significant impact on the state.
