Railroad Tycoon, shown here, is a major simulation of the railroad industry throughout history. Detailed graphics, and a meticulous interface are indicative of the polish game developers
deliver to their simulations.

To be successful, a game must adhere to the following principles:

  • The player must be able to affect the outcome of the game.

  • There must be an overriding goal/challenge with positive and negative outcomes based on player actions.

  • It must require mental or physical skill.

  • The outcome must be uncertain at the outset.

  • It must require the player to develop strategies in order to succeed.

  • It must offer multiple paths to success.

  • It can be educational in nature. Whether the goal is to educate a constituency or train staff and managers, using game-based models for learning is being used more. It offers focus on strategic thinking, competitive training, and team-based play. And the entertainment aspect of games can lead to repeated usage and help encourage otherwise unmotivated or disinterested learners.
